There are many different types of headache. Just a few of the most common are migraines, tension type headaches, sinus headaches, or ones that relate to the neck and jaw. We can help diagnose which type you have, and then either treat, or if necessary, refer on for more specialist treatment.
Neck pain is very common. There are many different reasons why neck pain may arise such as sleeping in an awkward position, tension or work related posture. Sometimes these issues may even lead to symptoms into your arm like pins and needles, numbness or weakness. By seeing an osteopath, we can help find out determine what structures are compromised (like your muscles, joints, ligaments or discs) and get your body back in balance.
The shoulder is a complex joint, which has a huge range of motion. Because of that, one of the compromises the body makes is that it is relatively weak in comparison to other joints, such as the hip. When you come in for an appointment, we will ask how the injury has occurred, carry out active and passive examinations and then give appropriate treatment. We will also likely give you a range of exercises to do in our rehab clinic so you can strengthen the muscles that strengthen your shoulder and hopefully prevent the problem from coming back.
Arm & Elbow
The causes of arm and elbow pain can vary a lot. Sometimes the pain can be caused by certain movements. You may have heard of "golfer's elbow" and "tennis elbow," where certain actions cause pain in particular points in the arm and elbow. You may also experience symptoms like pins and needles into your arm. This may be caused by compression of nerves in the arm, but may also come from other places, like the neck, where the nerves in your arm originate from. At AT Health, we will investigate and find out the cause of the complain, and then use a range of techniques to eliminate the cause of the pain, or if necessary, refer on if necessary.
Hand & Wrist
The hand is an incredible part of the human body and plays a major part of our daily routines. Because of this it is susceptible to injuries such as R.S.I. (repetitive strain injuries). Interestingly though it is also one of the first places where symptoms relating to other conditions may appear first, such as diabetes. At AT Health we will ask a range of questions and look at your medical history to find the likely cause, and then either treat, refer, or both.
The upper back is an area of the body we often have complaints with. This is because not only is it an area that we often hold tension in, but it is a common place for referral from other places in the body, such as the neck, and even the heart, lungs and other organs.
There is no need for concern though because through questioning examination, we can determine the cause of the discomfort.
In the UK, 2.5 million people have back pain every day of the year, one out of five people suffer from it at some point in their life and it is also one of the largest causes of work absenteeism. It can be debilitating and in turn effects everything about our daily routine, from being able to put on our shoes, to affecting out ability to walk.
The hip is not only the largest, but also the strongest joint in the human body. It has a wonderful design that helps distribute strong forces into our legs.

Often patients come into our clinic complaining that they have sciatica, often because they have googled "back pain." However, most of the time it is actually something completely different. Sciatica is usually a symptom of an underlying condition, such as spinal stenosis or a lumbar herniation. However it also has a close relationship with a muscle that links the spine with our hip, called piriformis, and in some cases actually runs through this muscle. If piriformis gets tight, or you have one of the underlying conditions, it can in some cases impinge on the sciatic nerve, causing a sharp, shooting pain down the back of the leg.
The knee is a large and complex joint. Despite it's size, it's quite susceptible to injury. Unlike the hip, there are very few muscles that surround it to give it support and strength. It also essentially only moves in one plane of movement, meaning that if it gets knocked from the side, or it twists during a fall, then it can be easily damaged. There are also various conditions that can effect the knee, such as gout or various types of arthritis. If you come into one of AT Health's clinic due to issues with your knee, we will need to take a detailed case history to rule out an underlying pathology, and then treat or refer accordingly.
There are a few conditions that can affect the shin. Some of them include stress fractures, anterior compartment syndrome, shin splints and delayed onset muscle soreness from running. It's important to get these diagnosed correctly by an appropriate professional, as some are much more serious than others and can be easily confused if you do not know the signs and symptoms to look out for. Anterior compartment syndrome in particular can become very serious if not treated quickly, as the increase in pressure can stop blood flow causing necrosis to the muscles and nerves.
Foot & Ankle
The ankle is a wonder of the human body. Even though its strength comes mostly from strong ligaments, it's still able to take the full weight of the body. However as most of us aware, taking an awkward step can lead to a sprain as our weight travels through those ligaments. Osteopathic treatment can do wonders for the healing process, as we can help reduce swelling and give you exercises to strengthen those ligaments post injury.
